Welcome to Golden Leaf 3D Printing

Updated my journal

Welcome to Golden Leaf 3D Printing!

Why make a website?

I have been having so much fun making things with the 3D printer. Even though I’ve only been designing for a few weeks, I’ve already learned how to model and print things that have made our household nicer. And what’s more, I love doing it!

A blog would be a great place to share my enthusiasm, I thought. I had also made a bunch of STL files. I wanted to post some for free because there are never enough free things. I wanted to sell some because they are good, and having a store would be cool. I also thought it would be pretty awesome to have a single page where I could post links to other sites or blogs that I found helpful. There were so many things I wanted to share, and a website was the perfect medium for doing so.

The quest for a name.

The idea was born, except for one very important thing: a name.

The original name for this site was Trekforge. ‘Trek’ for the journey (learning) and ‘forge’ because the site was about making things. I liked the name, but a Star Trek fan informed me that it sounded an awful lot like a site for Trekkies. Googling 3D Print Family showed me lots of interesting sites to go to if I wanted to 3D print pictures of family members, enough sites that I felt the name would probably give the wrong idea. I liked 3DPrintSomeThings, but it does sound awfully close to the websites Thingiverse, PrintAThing, or even the Reddit thread r/3DPrintMyThing.

At this point I realized that there are a lot of cool and interesting names out there, but I wanted one that was a little more personal. The Company of the Golden Leaf is the name of our gaming group’s adventuring party, and our group shares a love of 3D printing, often using printed pieces in our games. I checked with our members, and they all agreed that it would be pretty awesome to have our gaming group name added to this project. After all, to us the Golden Leaf represents friendship, curiosity, adventure, and fun - values that are very much in the spirit of this blog.

Once and Future Plans

Now that the hard part is out of the way, it’s time to build the site! I will probably not ever stop building the site. I’ve already added a blog and a portfolio, and will hopefully have STL files available for free download by the time this is published. As soon as I figure out how to open a store, I will also have STL files for sale (and more free ones), a form for custom designs, and the ability to order select prints.

Also Hello

In the meanwhile, welcome! Feel free to look around. Read an article or three. Have fun. Download some stuff. And come back soon :)
